The Danish authorities are currently working on new legislation concerning environmental areas.

These imminent regulations will apply not just to lorries but to vans as well.

What's more, additional towns and municipalities will be able to establish such areas, with foreigners no longer exempt from the rules and having to purchase an environmental license.

It will all be accompanied by extended powers for the police with a view to the enforcement of the legislation.

This new law is due to be implemented on 1 July.

ASFINAG, the Austrian motorway operator, could well put up the MAUT on lorries while at the same time delaying the extensions to the infrastructure.

During the first quarter of 2010, ASFINAG recorded an increase in its revenues of almost 4% (3.9 %, to be precise).
However, the operator is predicting a fall for next year, for reasons that include the continuing reduction in the number of old lorries.

By way of a reminder, the Austrian mileage tax is calculated on the basis of a HGV's emissions.

The VIALTIS Group, a specialist in road transportation services and a leader in cost reduction, has announced the launch of a new free service with high added value for international road transporters.

Aix en Provence, 25 May 2010:
The myVialtis.com secure website serves as an information gateway between VIALTIS and its customers. It aims to provide key information enabling them to prepare and optimise the costs of their various journeys across Europe.

Following on from the recent launch of the "Diesel Optimisation Programme" offer and available since the 1st April 2010, it is now used both in France and abroad by some of the biggest hauliers. This highly intuitive and efficient tool is available in 11 languages.

Online services include:

  • A European journey simulation tool incorporating Google maps technology and offering advanced functions: itineraries, fuel consumption, service stations and secure parking in partnership with the IRU;
  • A variety of practical information with real‐time updates for improved journey planning: fuel prices in more than 29 countries (source: IRU) as well as prices at the pump and services available at each service station;
  • Management tools indicating fuel consumption by vehicle, country or service station, consolidated for all petrol suppliers;
  • Access to dematerialised customer information management: online and current contract request module.
Régis Verlaine, IT director at VIALTIS, explains: "myVialtis is a real innovation for our customers. Our users can calculate and optimise all their journeys, and with just a few clicks they can view reliable information relating to road transportation, updated in real time. We put a lot of effort into designing the customer area, which addresses transporters' needs in terms of monitoring and controlling their road costs, and is based on a fleet management tool".

The customer area will be updated very soon and a version 2.0 will incorporate other services offered by VIALTIS, for example toll payment. Finally, it will be possible to consolidate all the data linked to a fleet of lorries or a particular registration. For example, customers will be able to cross‐reference all information relating to each vehicle: fuel consumption, tolls, etc.

With the launch of a new version of its corporate website, www.vialtis.com, and massive investment in its IT infrastructure, VIALTIS is further strengthening its presence on the web and across a range of new technologies to bring benefits to the road transportation industry.

The European Commission has sent reasoned opinions to Finland, Greece, Ireland, Austria and the United Kingdom for failure to adopt national legislation on the inland transport of dangerous goods.

Directive 2008/68/EC on the inland transport of dangerous goods, adopted in 2008, aims at guaranteeing the safe transport of dangerous goods by road, rail and inland waterways. It is in line with international agreements and ensures harmonised and safe conditions for all land transport of dangerous goods in the EU.

The Commission took the decision to send reasoned opinions because Finland, Greece, Ireland, Austria and the United Kingdom have not fully transposed the directive into national law. The directive should have been fully transposed by 30 June 2008.

The German authorities are in the process of testing an automatic weighing system for goods transportation.

Involving ten Member States, Tanzania and India, this trial is taking place along the motorway between Salzburg and Munich (A8).

The system measures the total weight of the lorry, the pressure on each axle and also the tyre pressure. What's more, it does so with a maximum margin of error of 1%, courtesy of sensors and an infrared camera. Consequently, fines can be generated immediately.

The costs of this project (christened Asset) come to more than 8 million euros, just over 6 million of which will be met by the European Union. The remainder is being co-funded by the 19 companies involved in Asset.

This trial will be continuing until the end of next year.
