In Belgium, the Flemish Region still wishes to bring in a mileage tax for lorries on all roads by 2013. That's despite the recommendation not to do so by the Flanders mobility council...

The mobility council points out that the successful implementation of this tax requires cooperation with other regions. Otherwise, “the mileage tax becomes almost impossible”, declares Franck Van Thillo, the council's secretary, who himself advocates a tax on all utility vehicles over 3.5 tons on the main routes only, and with pricing variations.
Still according to Van Thillo, “the sole obstacle is the problem between regions. There is no structure for the tax's collection and the price levels and distribution of resources also need to be debated.”
In spite of this warning, the Flemish authorities are still planning to go ahead with the tax in 2013. Given that an option at Benelux level would probably be more profitable, could they be jumping the gun?

According to the masterplan for “Güterverkehr und Logistik” (goods traffic and logistics), Germany is receptive to the idea of a national trial of ecocombis.

After consultation with the various professional bodies, the scheme has been reviewed and modified by the Secretary of State for Transport, Andreas Scheuer. Despite the strong pressure exerted by the rail sector, the ecocombi trial has in fact become one of the top transport priorities.

It is worth recalling that Wolfgang Tiefensee, the previous transport minister, remained steadfastly opposed to the trial of these 25.25-metre, 60-ton road combinations.

The Danish authorities are currently working on new legislation concerning environmental areas.

These imminent regulations will apply not just to lorries but to vans as well.

What's more, additional towns and municipalities will be able to establish such areas, with foreigners no longer exempt from the rules and having to purchase an environmental license.

It will all be accompanied by extended powers for the police with a view to the enforcement of the legislation.

This new law is due to be implemented on 1 July.

ASFINAG, the Austrian motorway operator, could well put up the MAUT on lorries while at the same time delaying the extensions to the infrastructure.

During the first quarter of 2010, ASFINAG recorded an increase in its revenues of almost 4% (3.9 %, to be precise).
However, the operator is predicting a fall for next year, for reasons that include the continuing reduction in the number of old lorries.

By way of a reminder, the Austrian mileage tax is calculated on the basis of a HGV's emissions.
