In what may amount to an infringement of free circulation, Greek farmers are blockading the border with Bulgaria…

According to the Bulgarian prime minister, similar blockades a year ago resulted in a loss of 10 million euros for Bulgaria's transport operators. In a bid to avoid a repeat of the scenario, he has referred the matter to the European Commission, which plans to penalise the disenchanted farmers for their behaviour in breach of the fundamental rule of free circulation. By way of a reminder, the farmers are demanding immediate financial aid for crops which have plummeted in price (cereals, cotton, maize, olive oil, milk, fruits) and have been blockading certain cities and motorways for several weeks already.
In addition to the farmers, Greece's customs officers are also demonstrating their disenchantment, posing a further potential risk to import and export activities.
