Among the European Parliament's Social Affairs Committee and also its Transport Committee, the idea of widening the application of the digital tachograph to light utility vehicles under 3.5 tons is increasingly gaining favour.
This proposal is championed by the social democratic wing of the European Parliament as well as by the Slovak Conservative, Edit Bauer.
The Social Affairs Committee is set to debate it before submitting the proposal in plenary session (mid-April). It will be down to the new Transport Commissioner, Siim Kallas, to decide whether or not to include this measure in the modification of the Working Time Directive.
Such measures will only increase costs and bureaucracy, protest its opponents.
