The European Freight Index produced by Danske Bank indicates less positive development than was expected. Having slipped from 67 in April to 63 in May, the index is lower than the participants in the survey had anticipated two months ago. The air freight index dropped sharply to below the 50 threshold and maritime freight also contracted, while road freight remains relatively stable.
The survey consisted of two main questions: what is the volume of freight currently being processed by the company compared with 2 months ago and how are the volumes likely to evolve over the next 2 months? The responses give a value index that varies between 0 and 100. Scores above 50 equate to expansion.

Transport ministers, representatives of the international bodies and financial institutions, along with the 350 delegates attending the IRU’s 6th Euro-Asian Road Transport Conference (held in Tbilisi), have called on governments to “support the revitalisation of the former “Silk Road”. This support would “make use of the key multilateral instruments of the UN for the facilitation of exchanges and of international road transport and develop auxiliary services close to the roads in order to promote and facilitate trade and road transport operations on the Eurasian continent.”

The 7th edition of the Transport Market Monitor (a joint initiative by Transporeon and Capgemini) indicates that transport prices fell by 5.6% in the first quarter of 2011. Worse still, the effect of this fall has been exacerbated by the 5% rise in the fuel price index seen over the same period. As a result, the transport price index is back to the level of the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2009. According to Capgemini’s analysts, this slump can be attributed to strong growth in the capacity index.

The European Commissioner for Transport, Siim Kallas, has not given his approval for cross-border ecocombi tests.

"Cross-border transport with longer and sometimes heavier road combinations is not authorised, by virtue of the Directive on weights and dimensions in road transport". This was the response of European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas to the German Green MEPMichael Cramer, who had quizzed the Commissioner about the cross-border tests with 25.25-m road combinations between Hamburg and Odense (Denmark).

However, no measures would be implemented to prohibit these tests, he added, provided no Member States objected to them.
