New regulation of the exemption from toll for natural gas vehicles in Germany

Since 1 January 2019, natural gas powered vehicles have been exempt from the truck toll in Germany (MAUT)

The exemption applies until 31 December 2020. The Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG) has now specified the requirements for the toll exemption. The engine must be powered either by NG (natural gas), CNG (compressed natural gas) or LNG (liquefied natural gas).

Bivalent engines are possible, in which case the proportion of natural gas used in normal vehicle operation must clearly predominate. The relevant supporting documents proving that natural gas is used predominantly in the engine must be available upon request.

In addition to the above, since the 1st of October 2019 Vialtis has been informed that the Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG) has specified additional requirements for the exemption:

  • Bivalent natural gas vehicles will only benefit from the toll exemption if they can demonstrate a minimum volume of the natural gas tank (a large tank or smaller combined tanks) of 300 litres or 115 kg of LNG.

  • If this minimum volume is demonstrated, natural gas shall be assumed to be used predominantly for normal vehicle operation.

  • This presumption can be rebutted in individual cases by the Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG).

  • Bivalent natural gas vehicles with less than the minimum volume of tanks (300 litres or 115 kg of LNG) will not be registered as toll-free by Toll Collect.

  • Applications completed before 1 October 2019 which do not satisfy the minimum volume requirements will be cancelled.

  • Vehicles fuelled by LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) are not exempted from the toll.
