It’s done: the United Nations have given their approval to Turkey’s accession to the ADR Treaty.

Turkey’s accession to the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) will take effect from 22 March this year.
In addition to the international rules, each country has its own regulations regarding the transportation of dangerous goods.

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) has pledged major funds in support of the UN Decade of Road Safety, to improve commercial road transport safety.

The Presidential Executive of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) has endorsed the goals of the UN Resolution on Road Safety by committing to allocate USD 2 million to the UN road safety implementation plan named “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”.
For the IRU and all of its 180 members in 74 countries on the 5 continents, road safety always has been, is and will remain a top priority issue.  In fact, for every true professional every accident is one too many.
In its great efforts to further improve road safety, the IRU is committed to supporting the goals of the UN Resolution as well as the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. In this respect the IRU supports the UN Resolution objectives to broaden the geographic scope and the implementation of the road safety projects foreseen.

In the Netherlands, hauliers are signing up for a test in which hydrogen-powered lorries will benefit from subsidies.

According to the announcement by the Dutch transport minister, Camiel Eurlings, a budget of 5 million euros has been earmarked to aid the success of this initiative.
This sum is not just for trucks though, as the project also covers cars, buses and other vehicles.

According to a letter from the German transport minister, Peter Ramsauer, to his colleague in the state of Lower Saxony, Jörg Bode, a national test of the 25.25-m road combinations needs to be carried out.

A working group is to be created in the coming weeks to discuss the matter.
Thus far, only a few federal states have given their authorisation for a limited number of companies to conduct pilot projects.

Should the working time directive include self-employed drivers? Not in the view of the European Parliament's Transport Committee.

The current directive on the organisation of the working time of persons performing mobile road transport activities is currently being overhauled.

The European Parliament's Socialists wanted to impose the 48-hour week upon self-employed drivers, but the Conservatives and the Liberals decided otherwise.
